Opportunities for Students
The Shiley School of Engineering has so many extracurricular activities to offer our undergraduates. From student clubs, competition teams, or research positions to global engineering projects, foreign study, on-campus internships and more, the possibilities are endless!

Clubs and Societies
Join a student interest club or a national engineering society while you're at UP! It's the best way to connect with other students, and clubs such as Steel Bridge, Electric Vehicle Grand Prix, or Robotics are open to everyone. Competition teams travel to annual tournaments across the country! Membership in National Societies offers opportunities to attend local and national conferences and workshops with faculty.
MECOP/CECOP Internships
MECOP/CECOP is the best opportunity for undergraduate engineering internships! You will complete two different six-month internships--and be paid as an entry-level engineer! Competitive placements are available within all major disciplines at nearly 150 companies across the Pacific Northwest!
Undergraduate Research
Unlike larger Universities, Shiley undergraduates have the opportunity to participate directly with faculty members on their current research projects. Research is done both during summer and the academic year, and there are options to either be paid or receive academic credit for your work!
Jobs, Internships, and Professional Development
Participating in an internship or job as an undergraduate is a great way to gain an edge when seeking that first professional placement. Shiley School of Engineering offers student employment opportunities with our faculty, on-campus internships with Industry Partner companies, and is one of four Oregon universities to participate in the paid MECOP internship program.
Additional opportunities for Shiley students:
Study Engineering While Abroad!
You can take engineering coursework as you develop a global outlook on a foreign study program! There are even Shiley courses with a foreign travel component to work on global engineering challenges.
Entrepreneurship
Innovative thinking and problem solving go hand-in-hand with an entrepreneurial spirit! Students can utilize the design and fabrication labs in the LEED certified Shiley-Marcos Center for Design & Innovation to prototype the products of tomorrow.
Grand Challenge Scholars
The University of Portland is a proud member of the National Academy of Engineering’s Grand Challenge Scholars Program (GCSP). The program is designed to prepare students to solve the 14 Grand Challenges of Engineering in the 21st century.
Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
Seniors are encouraged to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam prior to graduation as one step towards Professional Engineer licensure. This is a definite advantage in future job hunts, and students who pass the exam are awarded a FE Exam honor cord to wear at graduation!
