All undergraduate engineering & computer science students at the University of Portland practice innovation from day one in their Introduction to Engineering course. They then have many opportunities in their design courses to develop innovative solutions to open-ended solutions.
In addition, the award-winning Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Innovation helps students become E-Scholars or compete in the $100K Challenge Venture Competition.
The Shiley School joined the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN) in 2017, the first Oregon institution to do so.
KEEN enables University of Portland to collaborate with other institutions with a similar entrepreneurial focus in engineering. With 28 partnering institutions, including Arizona State University, Baylor University, Marquette University, Georgia Tech, and Villanova University, KEEN has become a network of hundreds of engineering faculty and students who work together to develop best practices in engineering education.
Three students from the Shiley School of Engineering were winners in the 2019 $100K Challenge Venture Competition. Computer Science students Devin Ajimine '19 (2nd from right) and Pouya Rad '19 (3rd from right) won first place in the Venture category for "Earthix," an enhanced immersive virtual tour environment and Civil Engineering student Julia Kimoto '20 (4th from left) came in 3rd place in the Social Enterprise category with "Kokua Kit," a monthly kit to stimulate brain training and caregiver support for dementia patients.
