Thayne Covert '23: Entrepreneurship Competency

To complete the Entrepreneurship competency of the Grand Challenge Scholars Program, I pursued an Innovation Minor at the University of Portland (UP), which focused on innovative problem-solving and design thinking. As a part of this program, I worked throughout my time at UP in an interdisciplinary environment to develop the mindset and skillset to respond to the needs of the world through human-centered design. For my final project I partnered with the company Skanska to develop the framework for a future augmented reality app in conjunction with the construction of the new Shiley Marcos Center for Design and Innovation at UP. Through the course of this project, I was able to apply the knowledge and skills I had gained throughout the Innovation Minor and GCSP to develop an effective solution that addressed a pressing issue in our community. The resulting presentation showcases my ability to think critically and creatively, as well as my commitment to using my engineering skills to positively impact the world around me.
