Maya Struzak '24

maya-struzakHello! I'm Maya, a Civil Engineering major graduating in Spring '24. Throughout my time at UP, I've had many wonderful opportunities to enrich my educational journey and foster meaningful connections along the way. As the president of the Global Engineering Initiative club for two years, I engaged in international and local service work. I currently advocate for my community as a senator in the school of engineering.

I discovered my passion for water resources and environmental engineering while working on a research project focused on sustainable stormwater management. During a semester exchange at INSA Lyon in France through the Global Engineering Education Exchange (GE3) program, I was able to delve deeper into water-related engineering courses in French and pursue a self-directed research project. To complement my research experience, I also interned at a private civil engineering firm the summer before my senior year.

I joined the Grand Challenge Scholars Program seeking cohesion for my diverse experiences at UP and a chance to reflect on my academic journey. Within the program, I've chosen to focus on "Restore and Improve Urban Infrastructure," aligning with my goal of contributing to context-specific, sustainable water systems amidst climate change and rapid urbanization.

As a Grand Challenge Scholar, I feel well-prepared and motivated to promote sustainable design strategies globally, especially within the realm of water resources and environmental engineering.
