My name is Erin McConville and I am a civil engineering graduate with the class of 2021. I chose to participate in the Grand Challenges Scholars Program because it aligned with my personal and career goals of being a well-rounded person and a well-rounded civil engineer, and it provided me with many resources to complete those goals. I chose to focus on the challenge of Improving and Restoring Infrastructure, a challenge which connects closely to civil engineering projects. While working on this challenge, I was able to experience all types of projects, from transportation and stormwater systems in Milwaukie, Oregon, to wastewater systems in New Zealand and Ghana, to water systems in Nicaragua. After graduation, I will use the skills and experience from the Grand Challenges Scholars Program in my work as an engineering designer on public infrastructure projects.
