Application

I am interested in the program – how can I request more information?

We are excited to connect with you and share more about the program. Please submit the Request for Information Form and we'll get back to you soon!

Our staff and faculty team are available to meet with prospective students. Please contact our office at engineering@up.edu to schedule an appointment. In addition, we can arrange for students to take a campus tour and/or sit in on a class.

When does the program start?

Each new cohort begins in August and ends in July if summer electives are taken. Two courses may be taken over the summer session (either before or after the core program). Students often use the summer before the program starts to finish outstanding prerequisites.

What is the deadline to apply for the program?

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Decisions are released approximately two weeks from application completion (four weeks if a foreign transcript evaluation is needed).  Delays are possible due to holidays, etc.  Once admitted, a $1,000 enrollment deposit is required within a month of acceptance. The deposit holds your spot in the cohort and is applied towards your first semester of tuition.

How do my letters of recommendation get submitted?

Within the online application, you will be prompted to enter the contact information for your references. They will receive an email with instructions on how to submit letters of recommendation on your behalf.

What is the minimum GPA required for admission?

There is no minimum GPA requirement - we take into account all pieces of the application, including work experience, recommendations, and the statement of purpose (in addition to GPA).

Prerequisites

How do I know which prerequisites I still need to take?

A list of prerequisites can be found on the Admissions Requirements page. If you have any questions about which prerequisites you need to complete, please contact Dr. Vijlee, Associate Dean for the Shiley School of Engineering.

I don’t have all the prerequisite courses necessary – can I still apply to the program?

Yes - we may conditionally accept students who have outstanding prerequisite requirements. Unconditional admission will take place after all prerequisite courses are successfully completed. Students are required to complete prerequisite courses prior to the start of the program in the fall.

Do I need to take prerequisite courses at University of Portland?

Although the prerequisite courses are available at University of Portland (though not all courses are available during the summer session), students may also take prerequisites at other institutions. Contact Dr. Vijlee, Associate Dean, for verification of your coursework to ensure the courses you plan to take count towards the prerequisite requirements.

Curriculum

What courses are required for the program?

The program consists of 24 credits of required coursework and 6 credits of elective coursework. The complete curriculum is located here.

Can I complete the program while working full time?

Although this program is designed as a 1-year, cohort-based program, it is possible for students to complete the program while working. However, students in this situation will likely require more than 1 year to complete the program. In addition, BME courses are not always offered in the evenings, so students may need to be on campus during normal work hours, depending on the schedule for that semester.

Tuition

What is the cost of the program?

Please see the Tuition and Fees page for up-to-date information on graduate tuition.

Are there financial aid options available?

Graduate students may be eligible for graduate student loans. Please contact the Financial Aid Office for more information.

When is tuition due?

Tuition due dates for every semester are available on the Student Accounts page.

Registration

How do I register for my first semester classes?

All new students will be registered for their first semester courses by staff of the Shiley School of Engineering. After the first semester, students will be issued a PIN number that will allow them to register online.
