Shiley School of Engineering: Civil Engineering
What We Do: Civil engineering originated to create civil works - the facilities that serve the public. Civil engineers design, construct, and operate things that have been around for a long time such as highways and bridges. Civil engineers are also responsible for things you take for granted every day such as drinking water and underground storm water pipes, as well as very prominent structures including the tallest building in the world, the Burj Dubai (Arabic: برج دبي "Dubai Tower"), a super tall skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Specialties: Civil engineering is often categorized by these sub-disciplines: structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, environmental engineering, hydraulics engineering, water resource engineering, and construction engineering.
Careers: Civil engineering graduates find employment in consulting engineering firms, government agencies, the construction sector, and the military. Most students also further their education in graduate school with a masters degree.
