Electrical Engineering: Prospective Students
What's it like being an electrical engineering student at the University of Portland? The University is small - about the size of a large high school. Classes are small so that students and faculty get to know each other. Faculty members - not teaching assistants - teach the classes, read and correct student papers, oversee the design projects, hold office hours. Beginning students take Introduction to Engineering — a hands-on course covering the design process, teamwork, writing, and presentations — and actually make a workable engineering device. First year courses in basic sciences are identical for all engineering students. Students start the second year with electrical engineering-specific science courses. In the junior and senior years, students take technical electives in areas of their specific interests.
During the first semester of the senior year, students enroll in EE480 - Senior Design Project Prep. Students are free to select projects of their liking within the field of electrical engineering. They plan and manage their design projects with the help of faculty. During the second semester of their senior year, students enroll in EE481 - Senior Design Project to build and test the designs they completed in the first semester.
