Shiley School of Engineering: Service-learning Programs
Engineers without Borders
This is an active student club working on projects in Central America with the advice of a professional engineer from industry and a faculty adviser. Active students travel to Central America to assess and implement the projects. See the blog for more information, and contact Professor Mark Kennedy.Engineering World Health
This a new student club starting in 2011-2012 that will be developing medical technologies for communities in developing countries. See Professor Joe Hoffbeck for more information.Global Senior Capstone Project
Dr. Kennedy will mentor a multi-disciplinary team of seniors (from Honduras and University of Portland) who will complete a design project for Water for People Honduras. All of the projects involve improved water and/or sanitation for rural villagers in this developing country. Students spend a week shortly before senior year in Honduras where they will meet their client and their Honduran team members, collect necessary field data, and learn about the sustainability issues involved with their project. The student team then works throughout the year to complete the design while collaborating virtually with Honduran stakeholders. See Professor Mark Kennedy for more information.
