School of Engineering: Facilities
Computers
The University campus is equipped with the latest computer equipment allowing ample access for all students. In addition to computer classrooms and smart classrooms with the latest audiovisual technology, general and special-purpose computer labs are available for student use. The engineering building has several rooms equipped with computers, including a 30-seat open computer lab with specialized software for engineering and computer science. More information can be found on the Information Services website.
Classrooms
Shiley Hall has three 40-seat classrooms, two 30-seat computer classrooms and two 75-seat tiered lecture halls. The building also has two conference rooms, one with video-conferencing capability. All classrooms are now interactive "smart" classrooms--classrooms equipped with audiovisual systems capable of displaying web pages, computer images, playing DVD/VHS/cassette tapes, and a number of other audiovisual media types.
Student work space
Several rooms in Shiley Hall are set aside for independent student work. These rooms are available to students for any projects related to coursework, research, or independent design projects. The space is particularly useful for seniors working on their final design projects.
Student study areas
Engineering students are fortunate to have the new two-story Vollum Study Room set aside solely for them to interact and study. The room is available from 7:00 am until 11:00 pm each day, and is extremely convenient as a place to work in between classes. The both floors of the Vollum Study Center are equipped with wireless capability. The room is accessed from the new two-story atrium with seating for socializing and studying, and a view of Forest Park, across the Willamette River.
Laboratories
Shiley Hall now has 17,000 square feet dedicated to labs to support specific classroom education, as well as space for individual student work, whether it is project construction or research. Listed below are the various labs in the engineering building:
- Environmental Engineering
- Thermodynamics
- Fluid Dynamics
- Robotics
- Computer Science
- Circuits and Electronics
- Optics
- Metallography
- Computer Vision
- Mobile Robotics
- Surveying
- Communications and Electrical Fields
- Geotechnical Engineering
- Materials Testing
- Automated Manufacturing
- Power and Control Systems
- Digital Systems
- Experimental Mechanics
In addition, the building houses 3,800 square feet dedicated to student projects.
Shop
The School of Engineering has extensive shop facilities overseen by an engineering technician. Because our emphasis is on undergraduate education, the facilities are dedicated to undergraduate education, whether it is for first-year students building devices for their design projects, or seniors welding parts for the Baja, high mileage or high performance cars. Facilities include: a wood shop (300 square feet) with drill presses, planer, band saw, tab;e saw. sanders, etc.; a welding shop with everything necessary to weld including metal inert gas, tungsten inert gas, and stick- or oxy-acetylene; and a precision-machining capable metal shop (1,100 square feet) with a milling machine, drill presses, saws, bead blaster, solvent tank and sander.
Shiley Hall
The newly renovated and remodeled Shiley Hall boasts 80,000 square feet on three floors, making it the largest building on campus. Other sustainable aspects of the building include a green roof, a bioswsale, energy efficient lighting, sage glass in portions of the glass wall, a water driven heating/cooling system in parts of the wall and floor and energy efficient water fixtures and windows.
