Fellowships
There are several external fellowships available for high performing students. These fellowships are typically based on your academic performance, not financial need. To be competitive, you need good grades and demonstrated leadership (e.g. in clubs, athletics, performing arts, etc.). Experiences such as study abroad and undergraduate research make you even more competitive. If you are successful at one level, this opens up even more possibilities.
If you have questions or need help, schedule an appointment to meet with the Dean and/or Dr. Orr in the Honors Program. [Dr. Orr is the faculty representative if the opportunity says that you need one.]
For Sophomores & Juniors
Amgen Scholars
The Amgen Scholars U.S. Program, an undergraduate summer research program in science and biology, provides hundreds of selected undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in a hands-on research experience. Students take
part in university research projects, gain hands-on lab experience and contribute to the advancement of science; interact with and receive guidance from faculty mentors, including some of the world’s leading academic scientists; and attend scientific seminars, workshops and other networking events. Financial aid is an important component of the program. Detailsvary by host university. See each university's summer research program website for more information: http://www.amgenscholars.com/
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
The Excellence in Education Foundation provides the United States with a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding Goldwater Scholarships to college students who intend to pursue research careers in these fields. http://www.act.org/goldwater/index.html
DAAD Research Internship in Science and Engineering (RISE)
RISE gives students in the fields of biology, chemistry, earth sciences, engineering and physics the chance to spend a summer working with doctoral students at German universities and research institutions on serious research projects. The doctoral students help integrate the undergraduate directly into the lab work and serve as personal and professional mentors. A stipend is provided for participants. http://www.daad.de/rise/en/
Department of Energy (DOE) Scholars Program
The Department of Energy uses the DOE Scholars Program to introduce students to the DOE. As participants in the DOE Scholars Program, students have a paid summer internship with the DOE and work at one of the DOE sites during summer break. Appointments are available in a variety of disciplines at participating facilities nationwide. http://orise.orau.gov/doescholars/description/overview.htm
NASA Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology
MUST awards scholarships and internships to undergraduates pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, fields. Each year, the MUST Project will support approximately 100 undergraduate students with a one-year competitive scholarship of up to one-half of tuition, not to exceed $10,000. Students who maintain the required minimum grade point average will be eligible for a paid internship at a NASA center. Additionally, students will benefit year-round from tutoring, lecture series and mentoring from STEM faculty and peers. http://www.nasa.gov/offices/education/programs/descriptions/Motivating_Undergraduates_Science_Technology.html
National Institute of Health Undergraduate Scholarship Program
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. The program offers: Scholarship support, paid research training at the NIH during the summer, paid employment and training at the NIH after graduation. https://www.training.nih.gov/programs/ugsp
SMART Scholarship
The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DoD laboratories. http://smart.asee.org/
Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) and Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP)
There is a need to attract diverse and talented students with skills which will be critical to the future workforce needs of the Federal Government. Through the SCEP and STEP programs, the Federal Government provides for work-study partnerships between the students, the educational institutions, and various Federal agencies. SCEP and STEP placements are student initiated. Contact the UP Career Center and the Federal agency employment office where you are interested in working. http://www.opm.gov/employ/students/intro.asp
Udall Scholarship
Udall is for students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment including policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, economics, and other related fields. http://www.udall.gov/ourprograms/mkuscholarship/mkuscholarship.aspx
