Civil Engineering: Prospective Students
What is it like being a civil engineering student at the University of Portland? The University is small, about the size of a large high school. Classes are small so that students and faculty get to know each other. Faculty members, not teaching assistants, teach the classes, read and correct student papers, oversee the design projects, and hold office hours. Beginning students take EGR 110--Introduction to Engineering. It's a hands-on course that enables students to explore the engineering profession. It covering the design process, teamwork and ethical and social issues related to technology. Students actually make a working engineering device! First and second-year courses in basic sciences are followed by discipline-specific engineering science courses and engineering design. Senior year students work in teams on a yearlong design project. For a more detailed description of courses, see curriculum.
Come visit us and learn more. We welcome the chance to show you around campus, tour the engineering building, and talk with faculty. To make arrangements, contact the admissions office or Kitty Harmon, engineering’s program counselor.
The School of Engineering welcomes transfer students.
